Interestingly, there is clearly a demand from consumers for recycled packaging with reports suggesting that in the United Kingdom alone in 2010 – 2011, 40% of household waste was recycled compared to only 11% some ten years earlier. However, this is countered by statistics showing the use of plastic across Western Europe growing at about 4% each year. In the UK, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of plastic are used each year with approximately 15 million bottles discarded every day. Most UK households now throw away about 40kg of plastic per year. This is clearly a problem when you consider that some plastics can take a staggering 500 years to decompose.
