Will you take a challenge that you won’t use any disposable plastic one day? This is a global initiative to reduce plastic pollution, aiming to encourage millions of people take part in the activity that they should use small and reusable plastic instead of disposable plastic.
In the future, it may drive firms and governments to take actions, such as recycling as much as possible in their fields. For example, companies ought to focus on circular economy and manufacturers have to undertake the due obligations of the life of products.
Plastic is not environmentally friendly. To begin with, if pieces of plastic bags are thrown randomly, some animals may eat them as food and die soon since it is lethal. Besides, it takes us hundreds of years to degrade plastic, so to use less plastic, it is helpful. All in all, producing less waste is more effective than recycling since recycling cost a large amount of water and energy. Whereas, we still try to decrease carbon emission.
Speaking of how to use less plastic, there are some methods.
Firstly, do not use take-out coffee cups, which will be thrown into landfills although they are recyclable, so use your own cups or reusable cups when going to the coffee shop. Secondly, use a metal straw, which can be carried conveniently, rather than plastic or paper straws. Thirdly, get used to carrying a big bag to buy goods. The shops where we can purchase fruits and vegetables in loose packing or which provide paper bags instead of plastic bags are preferable choices. Fourthly, if you want to buy meat, take your own vessels rather than purchase pre-packed meat. Actually, vegetarian diet is more helpful for the environment. Fifthly, reject disposable plastic bags to reduce landfill, which can save a large amount of money. Making your own bags by using recyclable materials or natural fibers, like cotton, hemp or recycled plastic bottles, is also a good idea. Additionally, use degradable plastic bags and endeavor home composting to spoil food instead of producing methane from anaerobic landfill if you can. What is more, do not use packaging or plastic knives and forks. Alternatively, use lunch-boxes and recyclable products, like cardboard. Besides, bring your bottle with you since plastic bottles are harmful. In terms of toothbrushes, we have to wait for 500 years until plastic toothbrushes degrade so bamboo toothbrushes are better options. And buy organic toothbrushes wrapped in recyclable packing. Furthermore, many people prefer to use disposable clingfilm but it is not eco-friendly so why not use cloths or put the food into a container? In addition, classify rubbish and cast them according to categories. You can also organize a bunch of friends to clean your neighboring places so that the environment can be improved and more people can be affected. Moreover, when you want to wash your face and remove make-up, you can use reusable cloths and biodegradable wipes other than micro-plastics and harmful irritants. It may be a big challenge but it can benefit a lot.
As customers, you can demand companies or stores use biodegradable products and packaging. If it is possible, communicate with your family, friends, colleagues and neighborhoods about their lifestyle and encourage them to make an effort.
If you can accomplish all above, plastic waste can be greatly cut down.
