My volunteer experience during the COVID19 outbreak

I am sorry I have no source of N95 suppliers when my customer asked for help. She is going to donate them to local hospital. I am very touched with her concerns.
I was a volunteer in Jan when Wuhan was broken out with COVID19 and locked down. It was really an unforgettable experience in my life. Every day was very nervous; especially felt the time was not enough. There were new messages in every second in the WeChat group. I didn’t do much cause I was in Shanghai. But some of volunteers in our group (Import goods donation) were really powerful, they stopped their own business (fortunately we were on CNY holiday), put all their power and time on the volunteer job. Some of them only slept 3-4hours everyday under high pressure. A lot of phones and messages were handled. I DO admire them a lot! They are heros in my mind.
The volunteers were coming from every field, including doctors, government, nurses, community organization, forwarders, trading experts, overseas Chinese, tour guide, etc., almost every part was included. We worked just like a team with management experts. We got new volunteers jointed us every day. The leaders have another 6-10 groups in every area; they were really very tired and full of responsibility. The government and social members were working together very well and closely during that period.
Here to share some procedures for reference.
1. A, who was responsible for gathering the information of hospital demands. We updated the Demand List of all hospitals in Wuhan at around 7pm every day. A has another WeChat group to gather the information where most people were doctors and nurses.
2. When there was a demand, A will share it in the group; it must include the information of hospital name, contact person full name/ tel/address/ detailed material name with style number.
3. B, who was responsible for purchasing the materials will come out and post “will do”.
4. C, who was responsible for the donation fund, will also post “will do”, and went to her/his own groups to share the amount demand to gather the money.
5. When B got the source information and have the goods ready to delivery, E, who was responsible for the delivery/customs clearance will handle the delivery. E has built the relationship with Baiyun Airport in Guangzhou and got the strong support from them. We got a big room to store the goods which have passed the Customs Clearance from overseas. Then we arranged to transport them to Wuhan every morning. Thanks for such quick and high support from the airport at such special time. Also thanks a lot for the support from SF(顺丰) & one big company of Wuhan on transportation supports.
6. Wuhan was locked down during that time, there were only very limited and certified cars could enter it. Thus F was responsible to communicate with the drivers and deliver the goods to related hospitals. F posted a picture of goods receipt and the picture together with the doctor to ensure the goods were finally delivered.
7. We sourced a lot of goods from supermarkets, stores, overseas factories including 3M, etc. in very big amount. G, who was the leader will split the goods to several hospital for each lot when the incoming materials are not designated to the certain hospitals. The ratio normally was according to the patient quantity in each hospital so that we could make it evenly.
Remarks: A,B,C,D,E,F mentioned on above are not just one single person, but some. For every roles, we have several volunteers are doing the same to speed up. We were not running physically, but we were running virtually via internet/phone while we were sitting in front of computers/mobiles.
Everyone was responsible for his/her position which led the procedure was running very smoothly with high efficiency. We have donated and delivered huge numbers of face masks, protection suits, breathing machine, eye masks, etc. to the doctors and nurses in different hospitals in 1-2weeks. We just felt like a solder in the front line, we donated a lot of money, time and energy on that.
On 31 Jan, when we found most of the factories were controlled by the government, and there were some fake products, or high price products found in the market, we thought it’s time for us to finish our work. This is the best support to the government. Because during the week, we have found a very big challenge from the products, there were millions of products flied to Wuhan, however, only a small portion of face masks were qualified to be used in hospital. There are a lot of styles in each category, we spent a lot of time to figure out which ones could be used, which ones are not useful. Only with the government’s control, the correct and qualified goods can be produced and supported to the correct area.
We were very reluctant to leave the group after fighting together for more than a week; however, we have to be dismissed. And everyone, except the front line doctors/nurses, were going back to our normal life. The fight was over, we are still the one of ourselves. I am quite proud of such experience indeed.
I thought we have saved the time for the patients in China, avoided the spreading to the world, however, we never thought of the breakout in other countries in March. We feel surprised and sad about the people now suffering such hard situation. As I’ve been the volunteer, I know very well how hard in the center of COVID19 cases in every country, such as New York in America, Lombardy in Italy.
I am working in the field of foreign trade for more than 25years, I never laugh at others when China is safer and other countries are risky. I hope more people can concern themselves as a citizen of the world. We are all in this together.
I feel sorry and sad every day when the new cases/death figures are going up so quickly. My prayers for all the people in the world. We’ll overcome it, be positive and stay safe everyone!
