Going out and play with the other kids is the one of the happiest moments to my daughter. But during the COVID-19 period, she was not allowed to go out in Jan& Feb. Then she felt so boring and became angry more often. It was hard for her and me. But gradually I found that once they know when & how to play, I would have more time to do my own job.

First, I would need to explain to her why we need to stay home and why should us take masks when going out. My daughter was 2 years and 2-3 months old around at that time, so the words she can understand were very limited. I said to her that there is virus outside and it will do harm to us, so we will need to stay home and use the masks to protect ourselves.

May be until now she still doesn’t understand the meaning exactly, but when she saw her elderly sisters and most of the families were staying home, she stayed home also. One of the important points to make her stay less annoy was that she could play with her sisters. Another one is that adults will play games with them in the spare time. In one word, to accompany with her is most effective way to calm her down.

Here is to share some games, they may help you arrange the spare time with the little kids during COVID-19.

1. Throw the circle
Lay the toys or snacks on the ground, and then the kids throw the circle (we didn’t have a circle toy so we twined a USB line as a circle) one by one, when the circle cover something completely, the kids can get thing as bonus. The kids can play with one hour.

2. Throwing the pieces of paper
I just cut the waste paper into pieces and the kids can play with them for a long time, in the meanwhile, I could do my own job since they can image the pieces of paper are rain, snow, or flowers, and they can be the princess, fairy or superwomen, etc. But I would need to clean the whole house when they finished.

3. Origami& drawing
Paper is a good toy. I gave them the colorful paper then they make the paper into plane, house, frog, etc. And they will draw on the paper. Another half day done with paper.

4. Save the princess
I draw map and set up some traps or bonus in some specific places, and a princess on the destination. The kids turned the spoon, and the when the spoon stopped on one number, they can move the steps per the number. Then the kids can draw the map, traps or bonus themselves for the next round.

5. Role play
When I felt tired and wanted to lay down for a rest but have to put my eyes on the kids, I would pretend I was a patient. The kids were doctor and nurses take care of me. But they sometime wanted to be a teacher, mother, or police; I have to play as a student, baby, or bad guy. I don’t like to play as ‘bad guy’ since the police will ‘shoot’ me, sometime it was really hurt!

Above were the games I played with the kids often and maybe we can find more games when discussing, so if you happen to think about how to ‘arrange’ the kids well when working from home during COVID-19, pls leave the messages and let’s talk.

Stay healthy and stay positive.
